After being released by UFC, Junior Dos Santos said he wants to fight Fedor Emelianenko and he very well might get his wish fulfilled.

The latest victim of UFC’s deep roster cuts, former heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos never expected his departure from the MMA promotion to go down like this.

One of the most popular faces of the UFC’s heaviest division for over a decade with key wins over the likes of Cain VelasquezFabricio Werdum, and Frank Mir, “Cigano” was let go by the company after turning down a short-notice fight with Marcin Tybura for March 27 after losing four in a row inside the octagon.

“I reacted with surprise, [and] I was a little bit impressed by the coldness of how they treated the case,” Dos Santos said in an interview with MMA Fighting. “I know it’s a business, [but] they just don’t care. The history we did in there and everything else, the dedication and how everything has always played out, was disregarded.”

Dos Santos might get his fight against Fedor in Russia

Speaking to AG Fight, dos Santos said that he still has the itch to fight, and one name that he is interested in is the great Emelianenko, who is currently under contract with Bellator.

“I’m taking some time to analyze this situation and choose my next step with certainty. I have offered. From boxing, too, which is my passion. Of course that it needs to be interesting for all parties, but I think it would be amazing if it ends up being viable. It would be pretty cool. I’ve always wanted to do that. When I focus solely on boxing, I do pretty well. I love the noble art.”

“I am a big fan of Fedor and it would be something cool to be able to face him. I don’t know what his situation is if he’s still fighting and I know he’s at Bellator. Bader who called us, who would welcome us, would be very interesting. He’s a really tough guy too. A rematch against Alistair Overeem himself, who always finds a way to get away from this issue. It can be at Bellator, wherever it is,” dos Santos said.

Now according to the latest reports of Russia’s Tele Sport, dos Santos is closing in to sign a deal with Bellator. Furthermore, his debut would likely be an encounter with Emelianenko in the Russian homeland.

Bellator has openly expressed their plans to finish out the heavyweight icon’s career with a fight in his home country. However, due to the global pandemic striking in 2020, it’s slowed down the “retirement tour” for Emelianenko.

The former PRIDE FC champion Fedor Emelianenko last fought in December 2019 when he returned to Japan for the first time in four years. Headlining Bellator 237, the now 44-year old legend took on a fellow PRIDE staple in Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Needing just under three minutes, Emelianenko put away Rampage with his classic big right hand to get the knockout.

If Fedor gets his last fight in Russia, Dos Santos may very well be a perfect opponent for him if considering the achievements he has on his resume.
