Florida Athletic Commission to change the rules surrounding marijuana use in fighters

UFC’s third-biggest ESPN event, UFC Fort Lauderdale, is set to take place in Florida on the 27th of April. A major change is a policy decision may be on the cards in the leadup to this event, as the Florida State Boxing Commission may make a change in their policies with regard to Cannabis.

Florida previously had a zero-tolerance policy when it came to cannabis. Even a trace amount could mean that the fighter would not be able to participate in the card. Last week, Titan FC Flyweight Champion Juan Puerta was pulled from the card minutes before his fight. However, the changes could see the policy ease around the use of marijuana among fighters.

The decision is far from being a done deal, and there will be a meeting with the Florida State Boxing Commission about the policy on the 4th of April. There was a concern ahead of the Fort Lauderdale event that the cannabis standards of the state would affect the card.

UFC will be hoping that standards are eased prior to their event. Meanwhile, in the case of Puerta, there is yet to be any definitive news. Given that Titan runs most of its shows from Florida, the decision was worrying, and they will be looking at the decision with concern about the future.
