Florida Judges tell Jorge Masvidal to stay away from Colby Covington

UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington’s story has seen it all in the last few months. The duo has gone from being roommates, and teammates to arch-rivals and finally fighting each other in the octagon. Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington used to be teammates at ATT but after they had a dispute the team decided to drop them both eventually, Jorge Masvidal was allowed to train at ATT again whereas VColby was banned from the GYM. The duo then finally clashed against each other at UFC 272 where Colby Covington was able to score a decision win.

The result didn’t sit well with Jorge who was dominated on the ground by Colby. A few weeks later after the fight. Jorge Masvidal attacked Colby Covington outside a restaurant in Miami and he reportedly landed some good shots on Colby’s face and also broke his tooth.

Jorge Masvidal was later arrested immediately and it was stated that if found guilty, Masvidal could face up to 15 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine for second-degree felony aggravated battery with additional penalties possible from the criminal mischief charge.

Also, accoridng to the early reports Colby Covington had not filed any charges against Jorge Masvidal.

Now in the latest court hearings, Judge Zachary James of Florida’s 11th Circuit Court set May 12 as the next court date, at which time it’s possible a trial date could be set. Masvidal on Thursday retained the same not guilty pleas for two counts against him as he previously had entered in written pleas following his arrest.

Also, a stay-away order has been issued to Masvidal, who must keep 25 feet away from Covington and 500 feet away from Covington’s residence. He also is not permitted to contact Covington directly or indirectly. The stay-away order was granted because Covington said he is “in fear” of Masvidal after the alleged attack.

Jorge Masvidal did not appear in person with his legal counsel, attorneys Mauricio Padilla and Brad Cohen, at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building. Instead, he was present virtually through a Zoom call, as was Covington.

The latest battery charged on Jorge Masvidal stated that on March 21, he committed aggravated battery on Covington by striking him against his will “with a deadly weapon, to wit: HAND(S) or FIST(S) and/or did knowingly and intentionally cause great bodily harm, to wit: BRAIN INJURY …”
