Nearly five years after it happened, “The Biggest Fight in Combat Sports History” is finally under discussion for its sequel, as Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor are reported to be in the works for a rematch.

Mayweather and McGregor squared off on 26th August 2017, marking the final professional bout of the undefeated fifteen times world champion, as well as the pro boxing debut of the former UFC two division champion.

The super fight, which clocked a whopping 4.3 million domestic PPV buys and a total revenue of over $600 million, concluded with a 10th round TKO victory for “Money”, even though McGregor had garnered appraisal from the combat sports fandom for going 10 rounds against someone like Mayweather.

I accept: Conor McGregor responds to Mayweather rematch reports

Now, reports made by FightHype have claimed that the two are involved in talks surrounding a potential rematch, as well as “The Notorious” himself taking to social media to spark the excitement further.

On his Instagram, the Irishman posted a photo from the Mayweather fight, along with a caption, “I accept”.

Even though there is yet to be any word from Mayweather’s side, FightHype’s report added that the 45-year-old would be able to land another 9-figure fight purse if the rematch comes to fruition.

Marking his 50th professional fight and victory against McGregor, Mayweather decided to retire from pro boxing, but not as a pugilist entirely, as he went into exhibition boxing afterwards. In 2018, he faced Japanese Kickboxer and MMA fighter Tenshin Nasukawa in a three round exhibition bout in Saitama, Japan and marked a dominating first round TKO victory.

Up next, Mayweather shook the combat sports world by agreeing to face YouTuber Logan Paul in an exhibition bout last year. The fight took place on 6th June at the Hard Rock Stadium in, Miami, Florida and ended in a “None Scored Bout” verdict, making Logan the only boxer ever to not let Mayweather come out victorious in a fight.

Mayweather’s latest encounter remains against Don Moore on 21st May this year at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., another fight that ended in a “None Scored Bout” verdict. He is now slated to face Rizin Featherweight Mikuru Asakura in September.

McGregor, on the other hand, returned to the Octagon after his encounter with Mayweather and took on the then UFC Lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov at the dramatic UFC 229. After losing to Khabib, took a year off and returned to welterweight to defeat Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in January 2020.

Last year, McGregor went into a two fight saga with his former adversary and newfound UFC rival Dustin Poirier and lost both fights. Their UFC 257 encounter in January saw a 2nd round TKO win for Poirier, and the trilogy at UFC 265 in July ended in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO after McGregor fractured his tibia.

“Mystic Mac” has recovered from the injury and is expected to make a return to the cage soon. However, he has not made any boxing appearances since 2017 and while the Mayweather rematch is reportedly in the works, its more likely to be an exhibition bout as the latter has been lacking interest in returning as a pro.
