Processing the loss of a loved one is never easy. Following the death of a young training buddy, former ONE Bantamweight MMA World Champion John Lineker is currently dealing with sadness.
The prevalence of depression and suicide among young people is rising globally. After a young comrade tragically decided to take his own life, the Brazilian striker has witnessed this sorrow personally.
Lineker has experienced similar loss before, which is why he is urging others to connect, look for help, and express their inner turmoil.
“People need to stop wanting to carry the burden alone. People need to share their burden because we really can’t do it alone. So, if you have something inside you that you can’t bear anymore, share it with someone, look for someone who can listen to you, someone who can help you,” he said.
“Don’t keep all the burden to yourself. Share that burden so that it becomes lighter.”
The untimely death of a teammate has crushed Brazilian combat sports veteran John Lineker. He is still perplexed by the startling increase in suicide rates among bright young people around the world.
There are many difficulties in modern life. Life can be difficult and unrelenting at times. Lineker has persevered through his own challenging moments, turning to martial arts as a coping mechanism.
However, not everyone discovers such useful coping strategies, and “Hands of Stone” still has trouble understanding the stresses that today’s youth face.
“It certainly affects a lot of people, especially those of us who are athletes. It’s hard to understand because sports are like an escape valve for us,” he said.
“So it’s unbelievable when something like this happens. I’m at a loss for words to describe this type of situation that happens to young people.”
