Ronda Rousey, the trailblazing fighter who conquered both the UFC and WWE, recently revealed a secret that had haunted her throughout her career. Her abrupt exits from both organizations were not merely due to losses or bitterness; they were shaped by an undisclosed history of concussions.
Rousey’s journey to the top was meteoric. As the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion, she was an unstoppable force. However, behind the scenes, she grappled with a hidden burden—a concussion history predating her MMA run. These head injuries had to remain confidential, allowing her to continue competing and performing.
In 2016, Rousey suffered consecutive knockout losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes. Fans witnessed her swift exit from mixed martial arts (MMA), and her dismissive attitude toward her UFC tenure left a bitter taste. But there was more to the story.
Ronda Rousey opens up on the struggles during her MMA career
Rousey couldn’t openly discuss her concussions during her MMA career. Revealing her struggles would have painted a target on her head, potentially preventing her from competing further. So she remained tight-lipped, navigating her legendary MMA career while concealing her pain.
“I had to keep [it] secret for years, so I would be able to continue to compete and perform,” Rousey told fans on Instagram Live while teasing content from her upcoming memoir, Our Fight“
“I think that there was just so much to [that Holm loss], that I couldn’t talk about it in the form of like an interview or an article or anything like that, or there would be several filters between my words and people reading it. So much had to do with having so many concussions when I was in judo before I even got into MMA, I couldn’t talk about it at all when I was doing MMA” She Said.
Transitioning to WWE, Rousey continued to keep her concussions under wraps. It was a calculated risk—one that allowed her to embark on a second high-profile career. She became a wrestling sensation, winning championships and captivating audiences. Yet, the unspoken battle raged on.
