In recent times, cryptocurrency has seen an unprecedented rise in recent times and aside from attracting people from all kinds of fields, it has also generated soaring interest from the combat sports community as well. Many boxers and MMA fighters have dived into the field and Francis Ngannou is the latest to step into the world of crypto. The reigning UFC heavyweight champion has teamed up with mobile payment service Cash App to receive half of his upcoming UFC 270 fight purse in Bitcoin.

Francis Ngannous is set to defend his world title against interim champion Ciryl Gane in the main event of UFC 270 set to take place on 22nd January. The bout is the last of Ngannou’s UFC contract and the French-Cameroonian has recently spoken against extending the contract as he claims to have been ‘underpaid’ by Dana White’s promotion.

Aside from taking fifty percent of the last fight of his current contract in bitcoin, Ngannu also announced that he will be giving away $300K in bitcoin to his supporters as he believes the top digital currency can empower everyone.

“I believe bitcoin can empower people everywhere. So I’m excited to partner w/@CashApp to take half my #UFC270 purse in bitcoin. I want to make bitcoin more accessible to my fans, so I’m giving out $300K in bitcoin! Follow @CashApp + drop your $cashtag w/ #PaidInBitcoin,” tweeted Ngannou.
