UFC 249 will feature an absolute barn burner of an antepenultimate bout. Former title challenger and #2 ranked Francis Ngannou will throw down against undefeated #6 ranked Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
Ideally a three-fight first round knockout streak against two former champions and an upcoming contender should get you a title shot. However that was not the case with Ngannou. A trilogy between champ Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier happens to be UFC’s priority. Unfortunately the dynamic sidelined Ngannou for quite while. Meanwhile he was called by Rozenstruik.
At the time Rozenstruik wasn’t even a year into his UFC career. Ngannou therefore claimed to have not even known who he was back then. Speaking in an interview, ‘Predator’ revealed he had to sort to Google to know who he was.
“I heard somebody was calling me out and I’m like, ‘Who is that?’” Ngannou said to UFC.com. “I thought it was gonna be some guy I knew, but he was a new guy.”
“The only thing I know about Jairzinho is that he’s the fighter who is probably the first guy who really called me out,” he said. “This guy came from nowhere; he has no name. I guess that’s why he called me out, to elevate his status. But I guess this won’t be a good idea for him. But I know I have to take him seriously, and that’s what matters to me.”
