Frankie Edgar says he wanted to fight Conor Mcgregor when he was at featherweight

Frankie Edgar is a surefire UFC Hall of Famer and universally recognized as a true legend of MMA, but he said he’ll always regret that he never got to fight Mcgregor when he was at his featherweight prime.

This weekend’s UFC Fight Night 184, which streams live on ESPN+ from the UFC Apex, Edgar (24-8-1 MMA, 18-8-1 UFC) faces a fighter 11-years his junior in Cory Sandhagen (13-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC). The fight comes nearly 14-years to the day after Edgar made his promotional debut, but he said he still gets excited every time he’s given a new assignment.

Sandhagen looks very much like the future of the Bantamweight division. The 28-year-old kickboxer has risen to the top of the ranks quickly, defeating several divisional mainstays in the process. He’s closing in on a title shot, but one more decorated veteran stands in front of him. Count me among those who somewhat wrote off Edgar’s Bantamweight move as too late, but “The Answer” pulled through with a pivotal victory in his 135-pound debut last time out. The odds may still be stacked against him and his final run at gold, but that’s seldom bothered Edgar in the past.

Frankie Edgar always wanted to fight Conor Mcgregor

Frankie Edgar and Conor McGregor were linked to one another a couple of times but for whatever reason, it never came to fruition. As McGregor was making his rise up the featherweight ranks, Edgar was a top contender and many figured they would fight. However, the Irishman faced Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo and then moved up in weight.

Frankie said that Mcgregor had called him out in early 2019 when he wanted to fight and even Edgar had accepted but somehow UFC was not interested in making this fight. Frankie says now seeing the stages where both Mcgregor and he is sitting he does not think the fight could ever take place and it upsets him a lot.

“Of course it upset me. He is the most popular guy in our sport,” Frankie said of Conor McGregor on Just Scrap Radio on BJPENN.com. “Anytime you can get in the cage with someone like that you jump at the opportunity. I do think it is in the past, he is at 155, maybe even 170 if he fights Nate, I’m a couple of weight classes below.”

Part of the reason why it won’t happen is the fact Conor McGregor seems focused on the trilogy with Dustin Poirier. For Frankie, he believes the trilogy does happen and is interested to see how it plays out.

“I don’t know, I’m sure he wants to fight Poirier again and Poirier wants to make some big money,” he explained. “I have to big up Dustin he had a great performance and is a great guy who has helped me train in the past. I’m just happy for Dustin.”
