The UFC has always been the subject of controversy surrounding unfair payouts to their fighters, and things have recently escalated with the entire Francis Ngannou situation. The UFC Heavyweight champion, who has been unhappy with his current contract in the promotion, did not extend his contract with the UFC and his recent bout against Ciryl Gane at UFC 270 was the last fight in the contract.

UFC 270 total payout was $1.8 million, while Fury and Wilder earned $50 million in total in their trilogy fight

There have been examples of MMA fighters switching to professional boxing for the lucrative purse it offers and Ngannou himself is likely to make a similar move in future, even though Dana White has always insisted that his fighters get the right about of pay they deserve.

In the meantime, Andreas Hale, senior editor of ‘Combat Sports’ revealed on Twitter the stark contrast between two of the biggest combat sports events of recent times- the UFC 270, and the trilogy fight between WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and former titleholder Deontay Wilder.

As Hale stated, the total payout at UFC 270 clocked at $1.8 million. Meanwhile, Fury vs Wilder 3, which became one of the biggest and most anticipated boxing matches of this generation, saw Fury making a whopping $30 million, while Wilder took home $20 million, making the combined payout 25 times bigger than UFC 270.

“The TOTAL combined payout for every fighter #UFC 270 was $1.8 million. Fury made $30 million in his third fight against Wilder. Wilder made $20 million. Fury and Wilder made 25x more than all the UFC 270 fighters COMBINED. Tell me that UFC fighter pay isn’t an issue.”

The responses to Hale’s post were mixed. While many spoke in favor of the fighters deserving better pay, others said that there’s no reason for them to fight if the purse makes them unhappy.

“The reality is anybody who’s being critical outside of the fighters themselves don’t know anything anyway,” Dana White himself responded to the criticism surrounding the fighters’ pay during an interview with journalist Manouk Akopyan in July last year. “They don’t actually know what these guys are making. And the fighters don’t ever come out and tell you. There’s no gag order on any of these guys. These guys can come out at any time and tell you what they’re making. I have no problem with that. But they don’t, do they? No, they do not. So it’s sort of a Catch-22.”

“Fighter pay has continually gone up every year since we owned the business. Obviously, there’s been tons more opportunities with the outfitting policy, some of the sponsors that we’ve brought in that spend tons of money with the fighters too. There’s a lot of opportunity here for the fighters. And listen, there’s never gonna be a guy that’s coming out and saying, ‘Yeah, they’re paying me too much. They’re overpaying me. And all of these guys that are champions share in the pay-per-view revenue.”

“Listen, if you don’t like it, go start your own MMA league and pay ‘em whatever you want to pay ‘em. This is mine and this is the way we’re doing it,” White added. [H/T BJPenn.com]
