The storyline surrounding Jon Jones’ UFC heavyweight debut seems to be far from over, but in Georges St-Pierre’s vision, it has the potential to have a happy ending.

Nearing three years of inactivity, Jon Jones is ready to make his heavyweight debut, but he still hasn’t found the ideal opponent. ‘Bones’ was last seen in action against Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 in February 2020.

After many ups and downs with the UFC regarding pay, as well as several back-and-forth speculations on whether the former Light Heavyweight champ would actually ever fight again, Jones revealed himself bulked up and ready for debut in the heaviest division.

Names like the reigning heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, former champion Stipe Miocic and the 3rd ranked Curtis Blaydes are favorites to welcome Jones in his new challenge, which could take place at UFC 285 in March.

And for Georges St-Pierre, Jones’ return and heavyweight debut will be dominating.

In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, the former Welterweight and Middleweight champion and member of the UFC Hall of Fame revealed that he was impressed with Jon Jones’ increased muscle mass after meeting him recently and bet on the success of the former light heavyweight champion in his new challenge.

“I’ve seen it on the red carpet when I got inducted into the [UFC] Hall of Fame. I took a picture and I put my arm around him, I was like, ‘Man, he’s solid like a rock.’ He’s huge. Jon Jones, he’s solid like a rock, he looked huge,” said St-Pierre, “And it looked like he put the weight at the right place. I can’t wait. I’m a fan of Jon Jones, I like to see him fight. I can’t wait to see him come back. A lot of people are like, ‘Yeah, he was out for a long time.’ He was out for a long time, but he’s Jon Jones, you know what I mean? Don’t forget that he’s Jon Jones. He’s arguably the best fighter of all-time too. He can make a comeback and I think he’s going to be successful when he does.”

While GSP himself jumped up to 185 to win the belt before retiring, that happened after a lengthy layoff and the Canadian had suffered several health problems, but he believes that won’t be the case for Jones.

“I’ve done it the wrong way,” St-Pierre went on, “I’ve tried to put on weight. I prepared myself a long time, I tried to eat and put on weight, but with the stress [on my body] it creates problems. If I would have to do it again, if I could come back and tell a younger Georges before he tried to put on weight, I would’ve told him to just stay the way [you were] at your natural weight, because you’re not going to have any health issues and you will perform even probably better. But certain guys have different abilities.”

“I have a hard time putting on weight, that’s the way my body is; some guys, they can put on weight easier, depending on if you’re an endomorph, mesomorph, ectomorph. A lot of guys have different tools, different ways of doing it, and it’s easier for them,” he added.
