Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is no stranger to the fight game. His legacy in mixed martial arts (MMA) is undeniable, but what if I told you that he almost stepped into the boxing ring against the legendary Oscar De La Hoya? Let’s dive into the intriguing tale of missed opportunities, contractual obligations, and an unexpected alternative.

Georges St-Pierre and De La Hoya Bout That Never Was

In 2021, Georges St-Pierre had his sights set on a lucrative boxing match with Oscar De La Hoya. The Canadian legend, who retired from MMA in 2019, expressed interest in staying active despite hanging up his gloves. De La Hoya, signed with Triller Fight Club, presented an exciting opportunity for Georges St-Pierre. However, there was a catch.

Georges St-Pierre’s existing contractual ties with the UFC prevented him from pursuing the De La Hoya fight. UFC president Dana White scuppered the plans, citing his well-known animosity towards the now-boxing promoter. St-Pierre revealed on the Pound 4 Pound Podcast:

“It didn’t happen because Dana White told me no. Dana White hates Oscar De La Hoya, and my contract with [UFC] after you retire still has ties with them.”

The Khabib Offer: A Twist of Fate

Although the De La Hoya fight fell through, Dana White reportedly had another proposition for St-Pierre. He offered him a matchup against the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, both fighters were already retired, rendering the matchup impossible. St-Pierre recalled:

“And then he [White] called me after, he said he wanted me to fight Khabib, but Khabib already retired and I already retired so…”

In the same podcast episode, St-Pierre shared his thoughts on the hypothetical De La Hoya boxing match. While acknowledging De La Hoya’s legendary career, St-Pierre believed that their age difference would have played a significant role. He stated:

“The Oscar De La Hoya [fight], it was not an MMA fight obviously. It was boxing, but it was boxing with bigger gloves, like 16-ounce, sparring gloves. And you know, Oscar is almost 10 years older than me. I don’t have the audacity of saying that I’m a better boxer than Oscar in his prime.”
