Former UFC welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns has revealed that he has been training with the UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman ahead of his highly anticipated matchup against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273. At UFC 273, the promotion’s hottest prospect Khamzat Chimaev will be taking on his toughest matchup in Gilbert Burns. Gilbert Burns is the top contender in the UFC welterweight division and Khamzat Chimaev in a short span of two years has got a huge fan following behind him. Now ahead of his highly anticipated matchup against Chimaev, Gilbert Burns revealed that he was helped by Kamaru Usman.

“Usman came a couple of days to help out,” Burns said to TMZ Sports… “He was helping me a couple of times, not training with me but kinda coaching. Very high IQ and very good advice. Was good to have him around” Gilbert Burns.

“That’s Rocky and Apollo, Apollo beat Rocky and came out to help out so yeah that’s kind of like being in it. To be honest, I make peace with that. The guy beat me, for sure I want to become champion, but I’m not after Kamaru, I’m after the title, I want to become the champion, I want to become the best. I don’t have any beef, nothing personal, no grudge against Kamaru” Gilbert Burns said.

Gilbert Burns and Kamaru Usman had trained together previously at Sanford MMA. But as the duo was set to face each other, Kamaru Usman then went to train with Trevor Whittman at One X lab. But now as that chapter of their lives is over now the duo is against back training with each other and helping out each other to get better.

Gilbert Burns says Colby Covington is avoiding top welterweight contenders

“Covington dropped the ball by asking for Poirier instead of a [welterweight] contender,” Burns said on a recent episode of MMA Fighting’s Portuguese-language podcast Trocação Franca. “He doesn’t accept fights. That’s the hard part. I’ve been trying to get a fight with Colby for years and can’t” Gilbert Burns said.

“Colby is very smart,” said Burns, who beat Stephen Thompson in his most recent octagon appearance. “If you look at his fights, he doesn’t fight anyone who’s coming off a win. ‘Oh, if it wasn’t for Usman, he’d be champion.’ Really? Fighting against nobodies, no contenders? He’s someone I’d like to fight. [Do] I think this fight is really going to happen? I don’t know, he doesn’t accept it and negotiates well, goes out there and talks a bunch of crazy stuff and a lot of people like his crazy talk. What can I do?”

“I don’t think he’s this monster, the king of cardio, but he fights people at the end of their careers, Masvidal, and does well. But he’s on my list. He’s one of the first on my list to fight.”
