Former UFC welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns added another top contender to his resume, as he defeated Stephen Wonderboy Thompson at UFC 264 via decision.
In the co-main event of UFC 264, Gilbert Burns battled Stephen Thompson for three rounds. Both the fighters are ranked in the top five of the division. The duo fought for the entire three rounds. It was a perfect chess match as both the fighters were cautious and respected each other’s game. Burns successfully landed three takedowns on Thompson which was his individual best takedowns and also took Thompson down very easily as compared to the other opponents Wonderboy had faced till now. Thompson tried his best to land some shots but apart from a right hand and a spinning hook kick he couldn’t do any significant damage to burns.
After the fight, all three judges scored the fight 29-28 with Burns taking the win. The fight wasn’t a fan favorite as it lacked the action which many fans pay to watch and the crowd started booing for Gilbert who wasn’t surprised by it.
“Sorry guys. Every time I step right here, I try to get a finish,” Burns said to a loud Las Vegas crowd. “Boo, I don’t care. I need more! Boo! Two checks, baby. The dream is still alive. I want to get that title.”
Right after the fight talking to Joe Rogan, Gilbert mentioned some names he would like to face next.
“Anyone can get it,” Burns shouted. “Jorge [Masvidal] if you want some, come and take it. Nate [Diaz], let’s see who the real gangster is. Leon [Edwards] you can take it as well.”
Gilbert Burns interested in Jorge Masvidal fight
Before getting the win against Stephen Thompson, Burns was coming off a brutal TKO loss against welterweight Kamaru Usman. It was a very competitive fight in the first round against Usman, but he came back and landed some heavy shots on Burns and defeated him at UFC 258.
Burns can’t wait to get back in title contention and wants to fight as soon as possible with few guys he has his eyes set on.
“I just took the NMF belt, I can take the BMF belt too,” Burns told reporters at the UFC 264 post-fight press conference. “If Leon wants it, he can get it. If Nate wants it, he can get it. I know I just got a title shot. I can’t ask for another title shot, I don’t believe they’ll give to me.
“I want to keep working and stay disciplined. I still need to find that balance of staying disciplined, but also get that finish. I just have to keep working, give me anyone of these guys. I like the Masvidal fight a lot, but he just got two losses. He makes a lot of money, so you have to give me an extra check. I’d fight him, but put me on a pay-per-view card and I’ll fight him.”
Until his next fight, Burns wants to have some rest as he worked very hard for the Wonderboy fight.
“I feel good, I feel special,” Burns said. “I just lost a title shot and then I have to go back and beat a guy that’s very dangerous. The game plan was to stay disciplined, hands up, take him down, smash him, make sure I control him when I take him down, don’t hunt for the submission in the first round like I did with Woodley and then end up losing. So stay on top, control and smash, that was the game plan. But for sure, I always want to finish. I felt bad I didn’t get a finish, but I beat a guy that a lot of guys doesn’t want to fight. I feel special.”
