Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira will contest for gold again, taking on the winner of UFC 282 main event Jan Blachowicz vs. Magomed Ankalaev, as confirmed by Dana White himself.
Teixeira was set to fight this Saturday, at UFC 282, for the 205-pound belt. However, the current champion, Jiri Prochazka, sustained a worrying shoulder injury and ended up being cut from the fight, leaving the title vacant.
UFC president Dana White revealed that the organization’s doctors classified the injury as “the worst in history” and that ‘BJP’ will undergo surgery and a lengthy rehab will follow before he is fight-ready again.
Instead of taking on Magomed Ankalaev as a substitute, the Brazilian did not accept the change at the last minute, pulling out of the main event. Instead, the fight for the vacant belt went to Jan Blachowicz taking on Ankalaev.
The winner of Blachowicz vs. Ankalaev, i.e., the new light heavyweight chamop, will be the one Teixeira faces up next, as confirmed by the UFC prez to Paddy Pimblett on Chatting Pony.
“One hundred percent, yeah,” White confirmed that the Brazilian will, in fact, be the next challenger for the light heavyweight title. “Yeah, I mean the fight [against Ankalaev] was offered to Glover. He didn’t want to take the fight.”
“So, there will probably be two fights before Jiri comes back. So yeah, it’ll be Glover,” he confirmed to Pimblett.
UFC 282 takes place this Saturday, 10th December, at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. Pimblett is also featured on the card, in a lightweight contest against Jared Gordon.
