UFC Fight Night 130, a.k.a. UFC Liverpool has some really interesting and intriguing match-ups in place. The main-event between Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson and hometown hero Darren Till has taken all the headlines, as the duo are expected to put on a striking clinic. However, another fight that was highly interesting was the co-main event bout between UFC welterweights Neil Magny and the Icelandic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert Gunnar Nelson. Though, UFC Liverpool has now suffered a set back as Nelson has been forced to pull out of the bout due to a knee injury.
Nelson is one of the most humble and respected fighters currently in the world of MMA and combat sports as well. He was undefeated but suffered his first loss against Rick Story due to a razor close split decision at UFC Fight Night 53. He was then defeated by fellow BJJ expert Demian Maia in a grappling exhibition of a fight. He then gained some momentum by two strong victories though again suffered a defeat at the hands of Santiago Ponzinibbio.
Nelson was widely expected co-headline the UFC Liverpool fight card against Magny but suffered a knee injury in training and was forced to pull out of the fight. He broke the news via a social-media post. Here’s what he had to say:
Unfortunately I have to withdraw from my fight against Neil Magny on May 27th in Liverpool. Last weekend I injured my knee. I will undergo an operation right away and I´ll be out for 8-10 weeks. I’m sorry to my family, my opponent, my teammates, the fans and the UFC.
This is a huge blow to me and I’m at a loss for words to describe the disappointment I am feeling. I was really feeling up for this fight, the training camp was going great and everything was just perfect until this happened. When all is said and done this is the fight business and injuries are sometimes an unfortunate part of it given the physical rigors us athletes put our bodies through. I will keep on evolving as a fighter while I’m on the sidelines and I’ll be back as soon as I can.
