UFC veteran Josh Thomson recently shared his brutally honest thoughts on Colby Covington’s performance at UFC Tampa, attributing Covington’s downfall to an inadequate training situation. During a post-fight analysis on his YouTube channel, Thomson commented on Covington’s struggles during the fight against Joaquin Buckley, which ended in a TKO victory for Buckley due to a cut on Covington’s right eyelid.
Josh Thompson Opens up on Colby Covington
Thomson noted that Colby Covington appeared to be struggling early in the fight, saying, “He was taking deep breaths.” Thomson suggested that Covington’s change in training environments might have contributed to his lackluster performance. Covington, who previously trained at the renowned American Top Team, has since moved to MMA Masters, and Thomson believes this change has affected his competitive edge.
“I don’t know if it’s age as much, I know he’s older but let’s be honest. Within two fights, he doesn’t look like the same person. Since he’s left the gym, since he left the American Top Team, he doesn’t look like the same person.” Thomson added, “Not having the talent that he needs to help him push his pace in training is what I feel like I’m seeing right now.”
Thomson’s comments highlight the importance of a stable and supportive training environment for fighters, especially when competing at the highest levels of the sport. Covington’s recent performances have raised questions about his future in the welterweight division, and whether he can regain his former form.
