Former UFC double champ Henry Cejudo believes Colby Covington has the potential to dethrone Leon Edwards at UFC 296 in December and become the new UFC Welterweight Champion.
This matchup is perfect for Colby: Henry Cejudo
Taking place on 16th December at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, UFC 296 is featuring a star-studded lineup with the main event featuring Edwards, the reigning 170-pound champ, taking on Covington, currently ranked 2nd in the division and the former interim champion.
On one hand, Edwards has remained as the welterweight champion since defeating Kamaru Usman in their second encounter at UFC 278 in August last year, followed by a title defense against the Nigerian in March this year at UFC 286. “Rocky” has also remained undefeated in the Octagon since 2015 when he lost to Usman in the first fight of their trilogy saga.
“Chaos”, on the other hand, is coming off a unanimous decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272, which marked the second victory in his last four outings, which includes another victory over Tyron Woodley and two losses to Usman.
While giving his two cents on the Edwards vs. Covington matchup, Henry Cejudo said that he feels the fight is “perfect” for the latter, and sees a new champion in Covington.
“I think it’s a great matchup for him. I think Kamaru Usman, when he lost the second matchup, he was playing more of a game of trying to strike. He wasn’t using his wrestling. In the first fight… he was winning that fight. He was fighting the best fight you could possibly think; very tactical, very strategic, taking this dude down, ground-and-pounding him,” Cejudo said on his YouTube channel.
“The thing with Colby Covington and Leon Edwards, Colby Covington just has one style, and that style is to just wrestle, to hug you. Yeah, his fight style is boring. He will just hug your legs. But Colby does finish people… This matchup is perfect for Colby. I think we are gonna have a new champion. I don’t think Leon Edwards’ takedown defense will be enough (against) a guy like Colby Covington,” he added. [H/T MMA News]
