Ilia Topuria is set to fight Alexander Volkanovski to get his hands on the Featherweight title at the UFC 298. The undefeated Spaniard has been oozing confidence about snagging the title from Volkanovski and ending their clash with a prompt KO.
Topuria is planning to face Conor McGregor in Spain after securing the Featherweight title from Volkanovski, but the fight is only possible if the “The Notorious” emerges victorious against Michael Chandler.
Ilia Topuria wants to face Conor McGregor at the Santiago Bernabeu
Topuria recently opened up to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour where he expressed his desire to face McGregor in Spain, at the home of the legendary Spanish football club Real Madrid.
“Of course, it’s going to happen in 2024… When? I don’t know, at the end of the year, maybe. And where? I hope it’s going to happen in Madrid [at] the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium… The stadium is ready to make events. You can close the roof. You can [cover the grass]. They made it especially for events so it would be one of the biggest ticket sales in UFC history.” Topuria said.
Santiago Bernabeu- one of the most legendary sporting venues
Santiago Bernabeu is the home ground of one of the greatest football clubs on the planet, Real Madrid. Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez started the renovation of the stadium in 2019 with the vision of making it the best Multisports stadium in the world.
Construction was completed in 2023 which allowed Real Madrid to host their home games in the Santiago Bernabeu after 4 years. Changes made to the Bernabeu were stunning as the roof can be closed, and new stands with an amazing new retractable pitch and many more features easily make Bernabeu different from every other stadium in the world, Tottenham Hotspurs’ brand new Emirates stadium is the only one which comes close.
Topuria has competed in 14 UFC fights and won all of them to date. He has his sight fixed on Conor McGregor and wants to take on the Irishman after pulling off a desired KO of Volkanovski in UFC 298. Only time will tell if we can get to see Ilia Topuria take on Conor McGregor at the Santiago Bernabeu.
