Due to his involvement in an alleged attempted murder in 2022, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez received a prison sentence.
In February 2022, Velasquez was taken into custody for reportedly firing at a guy in Morgan Hill, California. Velasquez was found to have shot Harry Eugene Goularte. Goularte had been charged with one felony count of a lewd and lascivious act with a minor under the age of fourteen approximately a week before to the event. Goularte was released under supervision and on his own recognizance.
Goularte’s mother operated a daycare that he hosted. At the time, several media sites claimed that one of the suspected victims was a member of Velasquez’s family. While Velasquez was pursuing Goularte, the former UFC competitor shot the man’s stepfather, who was also in the vehicle.
In a courtroom in Santa Clara, California, Velasquez was given a five-year prison sentence on Monday. In the past, the 42-year-old had entered a no contest plea and acknowledged his responsibility for his acts. He was “willing to do everything I have to to pay back that,” according to Velasquez. Instead of a jail term, his lawyers had requested time served and probation.
Velasquez has won the UFC heavyweight title twice. He had a 14-3 record by the end of his career. In February 2019, he lost to Francis Ngannou in his final bout.
