UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is all set to defend his lightweight title against interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier at Abu Dabhi on September 7.
This fight is expected to be a clash of styles. Khabib Nurmagomedov is known for his takedowns and amazing grappling skills, whereas Dustin Poirier has a solid stand-up game and takedown defence.
Ahead of the fight, Dustin Poirier said that he isn’t worried about his opponent’s takedown skills, instead, he is focussing on his own ability and improving himself.
“I’m not worried about his takedowns so much,” Dustin Poirier told MMA Junkie in an interview recently (transcript via Sport Bible). “I need to hurt this guy. That’s a huge part of this training camp. Putting myself in good positions to win the rounds and win the fight. Staying off the fence. Getting up off the ground. But, at the same time, I need to do what I do.
Dustin Poirier is coming off of a unanimous decision victory against UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway, who was moving up in weight class to challenge for the interim title at UFC 236 which took place in State Farm Arena in April. On the other hand, Khabib is coming off of a submission victory against Conor McGregor at UFC 229 last October.
