Islam Makhachev, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, recently shared his thoughts on Arman Tsarukyan’s success and the possibility of a rematch. Tsarukyan burst onto the UFC scene in 2019, making his debut against none other than Makhachev. Despite losing a narrow decision, Tsarukyan showcased his skills and resilience. His wrestling exchanges with Makhachev were particularly thrilling, leaving fans eager to see more from the Armenian prospect.

Islam Makhachev’s Role in Tsarukyan’s Rise

In a recent documentary on the UFC Eurasia YouTube channel, Makhachev revealed that he personally selected Tsarukyan as his opponent for their initial fight. At the time, Makhachev knew little about Tsarukyan but believed he would be a suitable debutant. The fight garnered attention, and Tsarukyan’s subsequent performances in the UFC owe part of their popularity to that matchup.

Islam Makhachev stated, “I think Arman should thank me. I signed Arman for a fight against me. He got signed to the UFC. I didn’t know anything about Arman then. I haven’t seen him fight. I just thought of him as a debutant.”

“I wouldn’t call it a close fight, even though many people say it was, I won every round. Arman still calls for a rematch. He had many opportunities to come out as a subtitute. I know that before UFC 302 he was offered to fight me. Either way, our rematch is inevitable. We’ll settle this soon.”

The Road to Redemption

Fast forward to the present. Tsarukyan recently secured a hard-fought victory over Charles Oliveira at UFC 300, further solidifying his position in the lightweight division. Meanwhile, Makhachev prepares to defend his title against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302. If successful, Makhachev will tie the divisional record for most title defenses.

But the looming rematch with Tsarukyan remains a compelling storyline. Both fighters have evolved since their first meeting, and fans anticipate a clash that could redefine their rivalry. Whether Tsarukyan can turn the tables or Makhachev will assert his dominance once again, the octagon awaits their inevitable showdown.
