Islam Makhachev is set to take on Dustin Poirier in a high-voltage clash at UFC 302. Often hailed as Khabib Nurmagomedov’s protégé, Makhachev has consistently faced comparisons to his legendary comrade and mentor. However, he is determined to step out of Khabib’s shadow and create his own legacy.

Islam Makhachev shares a close relationship with Khabib Nurmagomedov. Both fighters grew up together and trained under the guidance of Khabib’s father, Abdulmanap. Their bond extends beyond the Octagon, and it’s no surprise that fans have drawn parallels between them. But Makhachev is ready to break free from this label and forge his own path.

In a recent interview, Makhachev addressed the comparisons head-on.  Makhachev emphasized that he now holds the UFC lightweight title and occupies the top spot in the Pound-for-Pound rankings—a testament to his individual achievements.

In the UFC Countdown episode leading up to UFC 302, Makhachev made his case clear: “People say I am Khabib’s protégé. But now I have the belt, now I am #1 in P4P rankings. Khabib had his time, and right now, it’s my time.” His confidence and determination shine through, signaling that he’s ready to step into the spotlight.

UFC 302: A Chance For Islam Makhachev to Cement His Legacy

At UFC 302, Makhachev faces a formidable opponent in Dustin Poirier. With a win, he can tie Khabib Nurmagomedov, BJ Penn, Frankie Edgar, and Benson Henderson for the most title defenses in the UFC lightweight division. Additionally, a 14th consecutive victory would surpass Khabib’s record for the most consecutive wins in UFC history.

Khabib Nurmagomedov, who knows Poirier well from their previous encounter, believes in Makhachev’s abilities. He revealed that there is a clearly developed plan for Makhachev to follow against Poirier. Khabib hopes that Makhachev will finish the fight within the second or third round. It’s a testament to the trust and respect Khabib has for his protégé.

If Islam Makhachev emerges victorious against Poirier, he eyes a potential matchup with Arman Tsarukyan. However, he has also expressed interest in fighting Leon Edwards for the welterweight title. Regardless of the path he chooses, Makhachev is determined to leave his mark on the sport, independent of Khabib’s legacy.
