Reigning UFC Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev is willing to share the Octagon with Charles Oliveira for a second time, but feels the Brazilian fighter won’t have much going for him.

I can take Oliveira down at any time: Islam Makhachev

“Do Bronx”, the former 155-pound titleholder, was back in action earlier this month against Beneil Dariush at UFC 289. The win not only ended the long win streak of Dariush but also marked Oliveira’s comeback from the loss against Makhachev at UFC 280 in October last year.

UFC 280 saw Oliveira going down against Makhachev in the second round as the Russian forced him into an arm-triangle choke submission, and became the new Lightweight champion.

However, with his win over Dariush, there have been hints from UFC prez Dana White that Oliveira and Makhachev may have a rematch soon.

“He looked like a world-beater tonight, and I’m excited for him and Islam to fight again,” White said during the UFC 289 post fight press conference. “It’s the thing that makes sense. I’ll tell you on Tuesday. But yeah, I mean, let’s not play games; that fight [Makhachev vs. Oliveira] makes sense. That’s the fight that should happen. And I’m excited to see it again.”

All that being said, Makhachev doesn’t see much hope for Oliveira in their rematch.

“I can’t say yet if my next fight will be a rematch with Charles,” said Makhachev during the interview at Eagle FC 52 (translated by YukaHero). “We have to wait. Now, Justin [Gaethje] and Dustin [Poirier] will fight and the UFC will decide… If Oliveira will not fight me now, everyone will say that I am avoiding him. I never choose my opponents, I will fight anyone the UFC gives me.”

“I don’t think he can do anything [in a rematch], I’m not afraid of his grappling like the rest of the fighters, I can take him down at any time,” he added.
