UFC Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya stated that his hometown fans of New Zealand might never get to see him compete in NZ as he feels that the NZ government is not giving enough importance to MMA as compared to other sports. New Zealand has been facing a lot during pandemic times and they have made some very strict rules there. Due to these restrictions, the country is not hosting any major events that may attract a huge number of audiences that might affect the social distancing rules. Now due to all those things Israel states that he had no interest left in fighting in NZ as he is not willing to let his Government make any money off it.
UFC champ Israel Adesanya has always expressed his desire to fight in his home country New Zealand. the Nigerian-born star has grown up in the streets of NZ. His love for his culture both Nigerian and NZ can be seen in his pre-fight and post-fight antics. But in the recent video, he said that he is willing to give up his dream to fight in his homeland due to their ‘bureaucrats’ Government.
Israel Adesanya says that the New Zealand Government not giving any importance to MMA
“You will never see me fight in New Zealand ever again,” Adesanya said in a video he posted on YouTube (via NZ Herald). “All that money, they can get it from somewhere else. Their rugbys, their crickets, and all the others they’re giving exemptions to, but you will never ever see me fight on these shores. That was one of my dreams, to headline a stadium in my backyard. That dream’s dead in the water. That’s just the way I feel right now… F**k these c***s, I don’t respect them for what they are doing to my boy.”
“They don’t understand that we’re the biggest sporting team out of New Zealand right now. I’m not talking in history because we’re only just starting, but right now, putting New Zealand on the map. We’re the ones bringing eyes to New Zealand. You’ll never see me fight in New Zealand ever again, ever again. That’s me. I’m done. All that money they can get from somewhere else, from rugby, from cricket and all the people they’ve been giving exemptions to, but for me, you’ll never ever see me fighting (in New Zealand). And that was one of my dreams. One of my dreams was to headline a stadium in my backyard. That dream is dead,” said Israel Adesanya.
He also stated that the cops are troubling them and so is the media person who keeps giving their reports to the government. According to Israel, the NZ government is giving lots of support to other sports and is also allowing other sportspeople from different sports to continue to play and perform, but they aren’t giving the same support to MMA.
“The constant effort to stifle, to break up, to disrupt our team City Kickboxing from helping team captain Dan ‘Hangman’ get ready for his fight, that pi**ed me off the most. If it was me, I already know, they don’t like me, the bureaucrats of this fu***** country… also, they are racists, some of them are fu***** racists, of course, they don’t want a black boy representing New Zealand but you’re doing this to Dan ‘Hangman’ Hooker… Dan drapes his country over his shoulders at the weigh-ins, on the walkout, he puts this country on his back.”
Israel Adesanya is now scheduled to face former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 270. The fight is not official yet but Israel wanted desperately to fight this bout in his home country.
