UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya was all praise for Conor McGregor’s UFC return. Conor McGregor knocked out Donald Cerrone in just 40-seconds at the main event of UFC 246.
This was Conor McGregor’s first fight in fifteen months. He was coming off of a fourth-round submission loss to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.
The fans didn’t expect Conor McGregor to blow Cerrone out so quickly. McGregor busted Cerrone’s nose with his shoulders and then went for a high kick which dropped him and then went for the ground and pound after which the referee had to step in to stop the fight.
Israel Adesanya was very impressed by McGregor’s KO win. The newly crowned middleweight champion was in his home in Auckland, New Zealand.
“It was great, I loved it. I appreciated the way he played the game,” Adesanya told ESPN in an interview. “I loved the shoulder strikes, that was a gangster, I liked the head kick, that was sick, it was real slick. I’m a big fan.
“And obviously his management team is my management team, so it’s good. It’s a good win for us because when he wins, I win; when I win, he wins. It’s good for us because we get to claim a lot of the chips on the table.”
Conor McGregor and Israel Adesanya are represented by the same management company i.e Paradigm Sports Management.
Israel Adesanya to fight Yoel Romero at UFC 248
Israel Adesanya is set to defend his title for the first time against Yoel Romero at UFC 248. The fight will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March 7.
He is coming off of a second-round TKO win over Robert Whittaker at UFC 243 last October. His fight in March will mark six months in between his bouts.
This is unusual for Adesanya who became the UFC champion in under two-years of fighting in the promotion. He admitted that he would have liked to fight earlier.
“I would have liked to have fought sooner, I guess, but that’s just not how things played out,” Adesanya said.
“I’m in a different league now, I’m the champion … but it is what it is, I’m here now and I have a fight ready. So I’m just going to line them up like I did in my run at the beginning of my UFC career.”
Meanwhile, Yoel Romero is coming off of a close unanimous decision loss to Paulo Costa at UFC 241 last august. Prior to that, he lost to Robert Whittaker at UFC 225.
