UFC middleweight King Israel Adesanya says the ideal timeline for the super fight with former light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones would be around December 2021.
UFC middleweight champ Adesanya is undefeated in 20 pro fights, including nine straight in the octagon. “The Last Stylebender” captured the interim middleweight title with a unanimous decision to win over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236 in one of the best fights of 2019. The City Kickboxing standout became the undisputed champion when he put away Robert Whittaker in a title unification bout at UFC UFC 243. Israel Adesanya has expressed interest in moving up to Light Heavyweight in an attempt to become Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) next “champ-champ”.
But there is one more fight that Adesanya would love to have on his resume, and it’s none other than fighting arguably the greatest MMA fighter Jon Jones. Jon Jones and Israel Adesanya have been going back and forth at each other for quite some time now and there were plans of the pair eventually fighting in 2021. While Jon Jones stated that he could no longer compete at light heavyweight and as a result was moving up to the heavyweight division, Israel Adesanya was willing to chase Jones to the heavyweight division.
In a perfect world, Israel Adesanya would be facing Jon Jones in a Light Heavyweight title fight this Saturday night (March 6, 2021) at UFC 259 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Instead, Jones is busy putting some more meat on his “Bones” in anticipation of his eventual debut at Heavyweight, while “The Last Stylebender” will be facing current 205-pound champion Jan Blachowicz.
However, due to the pandemic, the timeframe has changed but Adesanya still wants the fight to happen.
For the fight to take place, Israel Adesanya knows the UFC needs fans in the arena. So, until the promotion can sell out an arena or stadium, the middleweight champ doesn’t think the Jones fight will happen.
“Unfortunately it may not be in summer or July, but there is still December. There is still December 2021,” said the 185-pound champion during a recent interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. “All I know is that fight needs a crowd. I can’t do that in an empty arena.”
And even if fans are allowed back into the arenas by December, there is no telling where Jones will be then. He is currently waiting to see what will happen when 265-pound champion Stipe Miocic takes on Francis Ngannou at UFC 260 on March 27. That’s because he will face the winner, which could happen in the summertime.
So basically there are a lot of factors that may change the course of the fight between Adesanya and Jones.
