UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya says the ultimate GOAT of MMA is Demetrious ‘mighty mouse’ Johnson.
The debate of who the greatest fighter of all time (G.O.A.T.) in mixed martial arts (MMA) intensified over the last few weeks after many dubbed Khabib Nurmagomedov as such following his win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 and subsequent retirement.
The media even crowned “The Eagle” the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter on the planet since he ended his career at 29-0, 13-0 UFC. That move didn’t sit too well with Jon Jones because the former Light Heavyweight champion held that honor for quite some time. UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has offered his thoughts on the ongoing greatest of all-time debate. Jon Jones has declared himself the MMA G.O.A.T in the last couple of weeks but some fans believe he has been displaced by the recently retired lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Adesanya on THE GOAT OF MMA
Other notable fighters who are often brought up in the debates are Georges St-Pierre, Daniel Cormier, and Anderson Silva. Adesanya believes the ultimate G.O.A.T is being ignored by the majority of people. Adesanya chimed in on the raging debate during a recent interview with Submission Radio, he said.
“Well, if you want to talk about ultimate GOATs, did everyone just forget about Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. If you want to talk about the most consistent, you know you talk about records, fighter of all time.
“F**k weight classes, just the perfect fighter, near perfect, never had one blemish outside the Octagon with steroids or anything like that. Never had any real problems outside the Octagon. Few losses here and there from Cruz and Cejudo. But a phenomenal fighter.”
“Someone who I would watch, and just be like, how’s his brain processing all this at the same time. The suplex to arm-bar. Stop all that GOAT talk, and jibber-jabber. (Transcribed by Essentially Sports)
‘Mighty Mouse’ defended his UFC flyweight title 12-times before being edged out by Henry Cejudo in their 2018 rematch. Johnson holds several high-profile wins over the likes of ‘Triple C’, Ray Borg, John Moraga, Tim Elliott, John Dodson x2, Joseph Benavidez x2, and Ian McCall.
Israel Adesanya, on the other hand, is now 20-0 overall and is widely considered one of the pound-for-pound best fighters on the planet. He last fought in the main event of UFC 254 in September, when he knocked out Paulo Costa to defend his middleweight bout. In his next fight, he’ll move up to the light heavyweight division to challenge Jan Blachowicz for his belt.
