In a surprising turn of events, former rivals Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya have put their differences aside and are now training together at City Kickboxing in New Zealand. The viral footage of their sparring sessions has taken the MMA world by storm, and Whittaker recently reflected on this unexpected partnership in an interview with Main Event.

“It’s a funny world, honestly,” Whittaker said “If you would have asked me a few years ago if I’d ever seen this coming, the answer would have been, ‘Not in 100 years.'” Whittaker explained that the decision to train with Adesanya came after several of his training partners at home either got injured or retired. “We started looking around and realized that City Kickboxing is only a two-and-a-half-hour flight away,” he continued. “They’ve got the bodies, it’s New Zealand, the place of my birth. Everything just started lining up… We’re getting along.”

Robert Whittaker Opens Up on Israel Adesanya’s Upcoming Bout

The former middleweight champion also shared his thoughts on Adesanya’s upcoming fight against Nassourdine Imavov on February 1st in Saudi Arabia. “I’d have to lean into Izzy being the favorite,” Whittaker said. “He’s so good at what he does, but Imavov’s a bit of a dog. Like, he can go the distance. His striking is good, I can see him pushing the pace, pushing the pressure to try to make Adesanya make errors, much like how Dricus [du Plessis] fought him.”

Robert Whittaker admitted that the transition from rivals to training partners has been surreal. “I don’t know if I hated him, but I’m pretty sure that 10 years ago I would’ve hit him with my car if I could have,” he joked. “It was that sort of relationship. It’s funny, I just left his house. I was sitting on the couch with him working on his YouTube stuff. I’m still kind of reeling. It’s a funny world.”

The unexpected partnership between Robert Whittaker and Adesanya has been warmly welcomed by fans, who are excited to see how this new dynamic will impact both fighters’ careers. As they continue to train together, it will be interesting to see if this collaboration leads to new heights for both athletes.
