Jacob Malkoun laid down a statement of intent and put the middleweight division on notice with a comprehensive victory over Nick Maximov.

Despite being dropped by Maximov in the early stages of the contest, the Australian dusted himself down and applied the pressure as Maximov was troubled by a knee issue.=

With Maximov severely hampered, Malkoun capitalised on this, earning nine takedowns in the context, and he out thought and out powered Maximov with his feet. Malkoun won the bout by unanimous decision, with three ringside judges scoring the contest in his favour – 30-27, 30-27, and 30-27.

The way in which Malkoun turned the tables was highly impressive, but it’s easy to forget that the Australian is only in the nascent stages of his career. At one point before turning professional, Malkoun was offered a coaching career in New South Wales, but he turned it down to focus on becoming a high calibre UFC star.

Nevertheless, the victory took his record to 3-2 in UFC, and in MMA, he’s at 7-2. And it is clear to see that Malkoun is already making the waves in the sport.

But when pressed about who he could face next, Malkoun said: “I don’t have an opponent. I don’t think I’ve done enough to call people out yet.

“I think it’s probably going to be the Perth (Australia) card in February. I’ve just got to get home, have a couple of weeks to enjoy training and having a bit of fun, and get back on the horse then.

“It’d be an honor – the UFC coming back to Australia, it’s probably going to be a full stadium, fighting alongside Rob (Whittaker), as well, if he’s on the card.”

Naturally, Malkoun has the tools to become the next biggest thing in UFC. It will be fascinating to see how he handles the middleweight division, and he will be garnering interest from plenty of reputable sports betting sites around the world, including ones in Australia. For example, bet365 will have a raft of lines for each UFC event, and they will also carry a wide range of futures, which will track what Malkoun could achieve down the line in terms of titles gained.

Malkoun may be relatively new to the sport, but he’s already made an impact, and he will undoubtedly be drumming up excitement in his home country.

There are of course bigger challenges and tests that lie ahead, but he’s certainly one to watch out for, and we can’t wait to see how his career unfolds.
