The main event of UFC Vegas 54 between Jan Blachowicz and Aleksandar Rakic ended in a rather anticlimactic sort of way, with Rakic suffering a torn ACL that ended the bout in the third round. However, the Austrian wasn’t the only one who walked out of the cage with an injury.
Blood was everywhere in my eye, so I just kept wiping: Jan Blachowicz
Blachowicz, the former UFC Light Heavyweight champion who was awarded a 3rd round TKO victory on the night, revealed that he sustained a gruesome injury in his left eye right in the first round, and he was unable to see out of it due to the flowing of blood.
“That was one of the first punches in the first round. [It bothered me] very much. I don’t see nothing,” Blachowicz said on The MMA Hour, “The first round, I was blind in [my left eye] because blood was everywhere in my eye, so I just kept [wiping] the blood from the eye. In second round, I was just afraid that he would destroy a little bit more. But I was focused and ready for everything.”
Despite the blindness in his left eye, the Polish 205-pound contender revealed that the doctor had given him the green light to continue with the bout before the second round went underway.
“I was a little bit worried, but I don’t think about [the injury]. I just tried to hide this eye to not have more punches on this place. Also, between the first and second round I was a little bit worried because when I see the face of the doctor, his face was a little bit not good for me, and I said, ‘Uh oh.’ But the second doctor come and say, ‘OK, he’s OK, he can fight,’” Blachowicz added.
In the post fight interview that followed the event, Blachowicz had revealed that he would undergo small eye surgery on Monday to repair the damage his eye had endured during the bout.
