UFC middleweight contender Jared Cannonier declared that he was broke after his latest win over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC on ESPN 29.

Jared Cannonier fought Kelvin Gastelum at UFC on ESPN 29. The fight was a technical matchup and both the fighter gave their best. The fight was close for the judges to call but they gave the win to Jared and declared him the winner by unanimous decision by scoring the fight 48-47, 48-47, 48-47 to Jared. This fight was an important one for him as his last fight against Robert Whittaker was title eliminater which he lost as Robert put on masterclass performance on him. Now a win over former interim title challenger Kelvin has put Jared back in the top spot.

“It’s either title or contender,” Cannonier told MMA Junkie at a post-fight news conference. “It was supposed to be (Paulo) Costa, but that didn’t happen. I really need to fight. I don’t think (Israel Adesanya) or Robert (Whittaker) are going to fight until next year. So that’s what? Four, five, six months, even? Then, another three and four months after that, I can’t wait that long. So who knows, I may end up taking the fight.”

“If they give me a name, ‘If you win, you get the shot,’ OK. Easy,” Cannonier said. “… I will say the end of the year, beginning of… 2022. Yeah, three, four months from now, I’d like to get back in there.”

Jared Cannonier says he is Broke

After his win over Kelvin at UFC on ESPN 29, Jared revealed his financial status and how desperately he needed to keep fighting as he is running out of finances.

“It’s always glorious to go five rounds with a guy like Kelvin at that level,” Cannonier said following the win. “So winning is even more glorious if you will so I’m happy. I’m not too happy I didn’t get that finish.”

The last time he fought was against Robert Whittaker which was at UFC 254 in October of 2020. After his fight with Kelvin, he revealed that he was in desperate times to get the paycheck and now he is still in need of money so he might not wait for too long before getting back into the ring. He wants to fight for the title but even if the UFC offers him a top guy he will take the fight ash needs money to survive.

“I’m broke so I need to fight,” Cannonier said. “Hopefully I get that title shot. The right name might make me say yes.”
