UFC on ESPN +19 in Tampa, Florida will feature a pivotal strawweight bout as former strawweight queen and #3 ranked Joanna Jedrzejczyk will take on #7 ranked Michelle ‘The Karate Hottie’ Waterson on October 12.
Jedrzejczyk is 1-1 in the strawweight division since losing her title against Rose Namajunas as UFC 217 in November 2017. Jedrzejczyk then suffered a crushing lopsided unanimous decision loss against flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 231 in December 2018. Jedrzejczyk might be low on winning form however speaking with a Polish outlet Polsat Sport, Jedrzejczyk revealed that the winner of the bout will guaranteed a title shot.
“We have in the contract that the win will get a duel of the strawweight category. The fight for the title is closer than we think,” Jedrzejczyk said. “After the victory with Michelle on October 12, I hope that in the first quarter of 2020 I will get a chance to return to the throne.”
Jedrzejczyk during her title reign was undoubtedly a dominant force with an undefeated record and a five fight title defense before Namajunas handed her the loss. Waterson on the other hand is on and impressive three fight winning streak with wins over Cortney Casey, Felice Herrig and Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
