Joanna Jedrzejczyk, the former UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion has finally put an end to the speculations surrounding her future in mixed martial arts, and the veteran Polish fighter has made it clear that she is deciding to remain in the promotion and wants to retire in the Octagon.
I would retire from the UFC, the best MMA league in the world: Joanna Jedrzejczyk
Joanna Jedrzejczyk is now two years away from fighting, her last outing in the cage remains against the number one ranked strawweight fighter Zhang Weili which took place at UFC 248 on 7th March 2020. Weili, who was champion at that time, earned a hard fought split decision victory and the match went down as one of the greatest women’s MMA fights of all time.
Following their contest, Weili was engaged in a two fight saga against Rose Namajumas, losing both fights as well as the strawweight title in a similar manner to how Jedrzejczyk’s rivalry with “Thug” Rose had went down. However, the latter has had no fight rumours or scheduled bouts in the meantime, with people expecting her career to be over.
Now, after more than two years of inactivity, Jedrzejczyk is set to return against Weili in a much anticipated rematch that takes place at UFC 275 on 11th June, with the winner expected to make it back to the title contention. On top of that, Jedrzejczyk has also penned a multi-fight deal with the UFC as she aims to retire in the best MMA promotion rather than joining somewhere else for a more luscious deal.
“It’s a multiple-fight deal. I always said that I want to retire in the UFC, and of course people would love to see me doing this or that after, but I feel like if I retired from MMA, I would retire from the UFC, the best MMA league in the world,” Jedrzejczyk said in an interview with MMA Fighting.
“I don’t want to go somewhere and fight for this bigger money. Money is not everything. I’ve saved enough money for myself, for my kids, for my grandkids probably, but it’s not only about the money. You need to have this pride in you and you have to know what to do and how to prioritize some things. This is what I’m trying to do,” the 34-year-old added.
