Combat sports are considered to be the most unpredictable in the world of sports. MMA in particular is widely regarded as the most unpredictable combat sport of all time. In the fast paced, ever changing world of MMA, anyone can be knocked out by anyone at any given time, even the most adept grapplers can be submitted. Huge underdogs can go on to shock the world and create records as well as history. Even quite recently something shocking happened which a lot of people might not have predicted, i.e Francis Ngannou’s punching record was broken, that too by none other than famous UFC colour commentator and stand-up comedian, Joe Rogan. However, it should be noted that Rogan broke Ngannou’s punching record by a kick.
In the build-up for the first UFC PPV of this year, i.e. UFC 220, the seemingly unstoppable Ngannou had set a new punching record by punching the powerkube at the newly inaugurated UFC Performance Institute. Ngannou had broken a previous punching record which had belonged to popular kickboxer Tyrone Spongs, by setting up a new record at 129,161. The record was heavily used by the UFC in promoting Ngannou over the heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in the buildup for UFC 220.
The UFC had even apparently thrown Miocic under the bus to promote the slugger. However, Ngannou’s weaknesses were soon exposed and he was handily defeated by the champion.
Rogan recently posted a video on his Instagram, in which he can be seen brutally kicking the powerkube. In the video he can be seen recording kicks close to 135,000. Though, he later revealed on his podcast, JRE MMA Show, that this wasn’t his best and that he actually recorded his highest kick at 151,000. Here’s what he said on the podcast:
I think [Ngannou] got 120-something,129, that’s so crazy! That’s what I get with a kick – with legs that carry you around all day. He got 129,161 with a punch, I got 152,000 today, bitch.
This also makes one wonder how someone like Edson Barboza might fare with his kicks on the powerkube. Mirko Cro Cop or some other heavyweights should also kick the powerkube once.
