There are plenty of words that can be used to describe UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov, however, Joe Rogan only needs two.
This past Saturday, October 24, Nurmagomedov put his UFC Lightweight Championship on the line for the third time. “The Eagle” shared the Octagon with Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC 254 inside the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Nurmagomedov scored the second-round submission finish via triangle choke.
After the fight, Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from MMA competition. “The Eagle” said that he simply can’t continue fighting without his father, Abdulmanap. Khabib’s father passed away earlier this year. The retirement announcement came as a surprise to many as the general consensus was that Nurmagomedov would attempt to go 30-0 before retiring.
It was an impressive win by Nurmagomedov, who has now improved to 29-0 in the UFC. Shortly after the match was over, Rogan went on social media to share the following message: “Khabib Nurmagomedov is THE GOAT.”

Joe Rogan has been working for the UFC since 1997. Initially, he served as a backstage interviewer for the promotion, but quickly moved into a color commentary role. He has worked for the promotion ever since, and has become as much a part of big UFC cards as the Octagon itself.
The end of the road for Khabib
Following his win this afternoon, Nurmagomedov announced that he’s retiring from UFC. This was his first fight since losing his father earlier this year, and now it appears it will be his last.
“This was my last fight,” Nurmagomedov said after the fight. “No way I can come here without my father. I spoke to my mother three days before the fight. I promise her it would be my last fight. If I give my word, I have to follow this.”
Over the course of his career, Nurmagomedov took down superstars like Justin Gaehtje, Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. While Nurmagomedov’s name is likely to be thrown in with the likes of Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre, and Anderson Silva, only “The Eagle” can say he retired undefeated. While that doesn’t instantly put Nurmagomedov at the number one position on all lists, it’s certainly enough for many MMA fans and pundits.
