John Kavanagh would ‘love to see’ Conor McGregor vs Frankie Edgar next

The return of Conor McGregor seems more close than ever. He has hinted that he would love to fight via his Twitter handle. He even gave a date for the end of this year. And if McGregor’s word weren’t enough, even Dana White accepted last weekend that, in all likelihood, Conor will return to the Octagon by early 2020.

Considering that the “when” part of his return is almost taken care of, the next obvious question is – “who”. “The Notorious One” has showed interest in fighting Justin Gaethje. Dustin Poirier, after his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, said that a fight with McGregor made the most sense for him. Conor’s reply to Poirier started a small back and forth exchange between the two. Conor’s coach John Kavanagh has a name in his mind about who he would like Conor to be matched up against. And that is Frankie Edgar.

“I think him and Frankie Edgar would be a great fight,” Kavanagh said during an interview captured by The Mac Life recently (h/t BJPenn.com). “I think it was in the works when Conor was kind of going on that featherweight tear. He’s an ex-champion, great fighter. Yeah, if it was me, I would love to see the Frankie Edgar fight this year if possible. And then go on another run in 2020.”

McGregor and Edgar have been linked many times before as well. When the former defeated Jose Aldo for the featherweight crown, Edgar was supposed to be his first title defense. Even earlier this as year, McGregor named Edgar as someone who he’d wanted to fight from a long time. And the desire to fight has been mutual. Even Edgar wants the fight badly. He has even agreed to move up to welterweight to fight the man. Coach Kavanagh thinks that the fight will be a good one on stylistical parameters as well.

“Frankie has a style that’s very difficult to deal with,” Kavanagh said. “But it’s also one we’re somewhat familiar with. Even from his first fight with Brimage. This small, fast guy, quick hands, wrestling. But Frankie’s just been in there with everybody. World champion, beaten legends like B.J. Penn and so on. I just think that’s a great match for the fans and for me. I’d love to see it.”

McGregor hasn’t dropped down to 145 pounds since defeating Jose Aldo for the title. If the fight does happen, it’ll be noteworthy to see at which weight class it takes place. If Conor keeps long terms goals in mind, then a fight with a young and surging contender such as Gaethje makes a lot more sense than a fight with an aging Edgar.
