British comedian John Oliver isn’t a fan of UFC Fight Island. Dana White fires back stating that, Oliver is reporting selective facts.
The UFC is the first organization is bring back live sporting events to the audience amidst the COVID-19 outbreak in the US. The promotion hosted three-fight cards within the span of a week.
All the three UFC fight cards took place at the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. The first card to take place was UFC 249 on May 9 and was headlined by Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje. On May 13, the UFC card was headlined by Anthony Smith and Glover Teixeira.
UFC then put the final card of the week on May 16 which was headlined by Walt Harris and Alistair Overeem. Dana White and company were able to pull off the event successfully without much hassle. The only fight that got cancelled because of the COVID-19 virus was Jacare Souza vs Uriah Hall.
UFC had 1100 tests in place for the three events spanning throughout a week. Jacare Souza and two of his cornermen tested positive for the virus and those were detected and isolated.
So far the fights taking place have only featured fighters living in the US. With international flights cancelled, the promotion had to make do with the local fighters. But UFC president Dana White has hired a private Island to host international fighters. The Island will be called the ‘Fight Island‘ and the infrastructure is being built to host fights.
John Oliver trolls UFC Fight Island, Dana White responds
British comedian and the host of ‘Last Week Tonight’ John Oliver covered UFC’s ‘insane’ plan to launch Fight Island.
“While they couldn’t fly in international fighters for that event, their president Dana White has devised an insane workaround,” Oliver said on his show.
“Yes, the UFC is apparently building a facility on a private island that they’re calling ‘Fight Island.’ Now, is that a clever name? No. Is it the perfect name? Yes! Because it’s the first thought an idiot would have if they wanted to name a private island where fights happen.”
He then went on to suggest different names for Fight Island such as ‘Brawlhamas’ and ‘UFC-sea’.
It didn’t take long for Dana White to respond and he fired back at Oliver for reporting selective facts.
I like John Oliver, I think he's funny.
But this is a perfect example of how you can control the narrative by using selective facts. We did approximately 1,100 tests, only 3 were positive, it was a fighter and his 2 trainers and we had 3 events NOT 1 (via @LastWeekTonight) pic.twitter.com/h605hNnLtd
