Jon Jones gives massive respect to DC; says trilogy fight won’t happen at HW

Last week current UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier revealed that he will move down to light heavyweight division to challenge current UFC light heavyweight champion in a trilogy fight.

Although Cormier has said on numerous occasions that the weight cut to 205lb has been horrendous for him, he said that he is willing to make that exception to fight Jones at that weight class.

That’s where he won the (two previous) fights, and that’s where I would want to beat him at,” Cormier said.

But Jon Jones who has beaten him once before at UFC 182, [technically twice if the rematch at UFC 214 is counted where the fight was turned into an NC after Jones failed a drug test] doesn’t believe that Cormier will be willing to move down to light heavyweight division.

He’s definitely never coming back to light heavyweight,” Jones said. “He says it, but there’s no way he’s coming back to light heavyweight. To commit your life to lose that type of weight and to come up short again would be so devastating. It would take an incredible amount of courage to attempt it, and to come up short would just be so devastating. I doubt he’d put himself through that for the third time.”

Jon Jones also said that he is not willing to move up to the heavyweight division to fight Cormier there.

I’m a realist,” Jones said. “Daniel Cormier is a special athlete and anyone can be beat. I think my greatest chance of losing would be to a guy like Daniel Cormier. We’d be giving him a power and strength advantage over me; it just doesn’t make sense.

Right now, I make light heavyweight very easily, and it would just make no sense to fight a guy who, I think, technically (is) on your level and to give him a size advantage. I’m not doing it. I’m sure my fans don’t like to hear me talk like that, but that’s just me being a realist – and being respectful of Daniel’s abilities.”

Jon Jones will fight Thiago Santos at UFC 239 in Las Vegas on July 6 and Daniel Cormier will be defending his heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 241 on August 17 in Anaheim, California.
