In the history of the UFC, Jon Jones is regarded as one of the best fighters. Which of his numerous noteworthy triumphs, however, was his best? That’s exactly what the individual himself recently disclosed.
Jones is without a doubt the greatest fighter in the history of the UFC and a former light heavyweight champion. Although he was the heavyweight champion for a much shorter period of time, he is also a past heavyweight champion.
After months of rumors, the former two-division champion finally announced his retirement earlier this month, thus ending his storied career.
Since then, he has been rather active on social media. During a recent interview with UFC fans on X, Jones was asked to describe his greatest performance to date. His response—his first altercation with Alexander Gustafsson—is not going to come as a surprise.
Jon Jones makes the initial call. Alexander Gustafsson battles for his greatest result
“[Gustafson] 1,” Jones wrote. “I had to push through so much to prove to myself how bad I wanted it. A lot of skill went out the window, and I had to fight with my heart.”
Back in 2013, Jones and Gustafsson met for the first time at UFC 165 in Toronto, Canada. Due in large part to the fact that he was one of the few fighters in the division who could match the increasingly dominant champion’s height and reach, many fans believed Gustafsson might put up a strong fight against the Jones. Ultimately, those fears were confirmed as Gustafsson put Jones through a dramatic five-round battle, pushing him to the edge.
Although many fans believed Gustafsson should have won, Jones ultimately kept the championship by unanimous decision, and the argument continues to this day. In 2018, Jones and Gustafsson rematched. Jones outperformed his opponent the second time, defeating him with ground strikes in the third round.
