Former Light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones has responded to Dana White’s plan of setting him up with former champion Stipe Miocic
Jon Jones has been in talks to fight Francis Ngannou for the heavyweight title. Ngannou won the belt by knocking out Stipe Miocic at UFC 260. Jon was clear that he will fight only for big money. Dana White made it clear several times that the amount Jones wanted to fight Ngannou was too much and they already have Derrick Lewis, who would be willing to take that fight for a much lesser price.
Speaking with TSN on Monday, Dana White confirmed that for the time being at least, the UFC is setting aside Jon and moving forward with the rematch between Ngannou and Derrick Lewis for later this summer.
“We’re working on that fight,” White said. “That fight is going to happen this summer.”
Dana White also said that just because Lewis is getting the first crack at the new champion it doesn’t mean that Jones is out of the picture. He wants Jon to fight someone else till then and maybe will get a chance at Ngannou later.
“Whether Jon has a manager or not, Jon is going to do what Jon wants to do,” White said. “So it’s probably something that Jon Jones needs to work out. I know that he and Hunter have a good relationship. So I think those guys are going to get together soon and talk.
“Listen, you look as the last however many years and people ask me who I think the best ever is and I say Jon Jones. Jon Jones is a massive part of the history of this company. He’s one of the best ever. (No matter) where you stand, whether you think it is him, Anderson (Silva), Khabib (Nurmagomedov), GSP (Georges St-Pierre), wherever you stand on that, he’s one of the best of all-time. Obviously there is still some big fights that can be made with him, and we would love to do it. It’s not like we can’t get something done over here.”
Jon Jones responds to Dana White
After listening to Dana White’s comments, Jones was quick to respond via tweets which he deleted later.
“Don’t get excited people, I’m not fighting Stipe”
“I’m not here to fight Stipe but I will defend my belt against him no problem. I’m looking for the biggest draw and I’m willing to wait. 33 years old in better athlete right now than I’ve ever been before.. im just going to keep training my ass off”
“I’m sick of hearing the same shit, you’re not a big enough star, you don’t bring in enough paper view. I’m ready to fight fights that will bring in the pay-per-view. The world wants to see some black on black crime right now and I’m ready to give it to them”
