Former UFC light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound #1 fighter, Jon ‘Bones’ Jones (22-1-1NC MMA, 16-1-1NC UFC) will make his much-anticipated return to take on former two-time title challenger Alexander ‘The Mauler’ Gustafsson (18-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) at UFC 232 on December 29. However in an ideal world, which unfortunately this isn’t, Jones could be fighting former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.
Jones was slated to fight Lesnar after his TKO victory over arch rival Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 in July last year. However, Jones was tested positive for the steroid Turinabol in an in-competition drug test before his rematch against Cormier at UFC 214 last year. Jones who defeated Cormier via TKO in the third round, was stripped off the title and Cormier was named as the undisputed champ with immediate effect.
During UFC 232 conference call, Jones accepted that the Lesnar fight is still in his mind.
“Fighting Brock Lesnar is aways appealing. That’s a win-win situation. That’s a huge money fight and that’s me fighting a guy who’s a hell of a lot bigger than me and everyone wins in that situation.”
“I win because of the courage it takes to step in there against a guy who’s way bigger than you, I win because of the pay-per-view that will follow, the fans will win. It would be great for the sport and it’d be good for everyone involved. So I’m totally up for that.”
However Jones will have to get rid of the ‘Mauler’ first.
