Jorge Masvidal in contention for title shot after Colby Covington talks ‘hit a snag’

The fans were finally getting the welterweight matchup they have been waiting for all along as Dana White had confirmed last month that former interim UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington was scheduled to fight UFC champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 244 which is supposed to take place on November 2 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.

But all of that is in jeopardy as per Ariel Helwani of ESPN, who broke the news on Friday morning (IST) that the negotiations for the fight have stalled.

“The Kamaru Usman v Colby Covington 170 title fight is far from done, multiple sources say,” ESPN’s Ariel Helwani wrote. “In fact, negotiations have hit a snag and UFC is now looking at other options, sources say. Those options include a different welterweight title fight and/or a different main event.

“The making of this fight has taken many twists and turns over the past few days, so there’s no telling if they end up with it,” he added. “But right now, it’s not in good standing and other options are being explored. Developing.” (H/T – BJPenn.com)

This has all led to Jorge Masvidal emerging as the newest contender for the title challenge. Masvidal last fought against Ben Askren at UFC 239, where he made the record for the fastest knockout in UFC history.
