Jorge Masvidal says he was kicked out of ATT for trying to assault Colby Covington

UFC top welterweight and BMF Jorge Masvidal revealed that he was once kicked out of American Top Team for trying to assault fellow teammate Colby Covington.

After dropping a unanimous decision on less than a week’s notice to Usman at UFC 251 in Abu Dhabi, Masvidal will get his chance at redemption with a full training camp when they headline UFC 261 on April 24 at the sold-out VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.

“Gamebred” expects to leave the building Saturday night with another championship belt to sit beside the “BMF title” on the mantle, and then run it back with “The Nigerian Nightmare” to settle the score once and for all.

Another arch rival of Jorge is his ex-best friend Colby Covington. As Covington and Masvidal’s relationship turned sour, both men trashed one another on social media and in interviews. That then turned into them getting into arguments at the gym. After that, according to Masvidal, both men were kicked out by Dan Lambert.

“Colby’s that one person and I always say this, when I see him, it is a free pay-per-view right there. He knows that and that’s why he used to make videos going ‘this guy’s so unprofessional and he tried to fight me on the street.’ I got kicked out of the gym for trying to assault him one time,” Masvidal said to ESPN. “I used to go to spots that he would frequent a lot and got the police called on me and things like that. I know a lot of people think, man you’re an idiot, you’re a professional fighter why would you do that. Because I f*****g feel like it and nobody tells me what to do. It is more loyal to me. You can’t do something wrong to someone I love, it just isn’t going to happen.”

After some time away, Masvidal says he was let back in the gym but Covington left ATT for good. Since then, the two have continued to trade shots. Many thought they would end up fighting one another in 2021. Instead, Masvidal (35-14 MMA, 12-7 UFC) is set to challenge Usman (18-1 MMA, 13-0 UFC) for the UFC welterweight title for a second time this month in the main event rematch on April 24.

The first time Masvidal fought Usman was at UFC 251 in July. He replaced Gilbert Burns on six days’ notice and initially pointed to a lack of a complete training camp for the loss. This, despite the fact he was originally in negotiations to fight Usman at the event before he couldn’t reach terms with the UFC.

With the sequel rapidly approaching, Masvidal said he’ll enter the fight strong. He’s been aware of it for long enough to properly time his weight cut, and after putting his body through agony last time, he anticipates feeling like a different man at UFC 261.

I’m not going to cut 20 pounds of weight now, mainly of water, in six days,” Masvidal said on Tuesday during an ESPN+ Q&A hosted by Laura Sanko. “As I stand right now I’m eight, nine pounds before I hit the mark of 170. So it’s a different weight cut altogether. That’s going to be the main determining factor I think.”
