Jorge Masvidal, the 9th ranked UFC welterweight star and the symbolic ‘BMF’ titleholder, is looking at himself as the next 170-pound champion ahead of his comeback to the Octagon.

The UFC’s welterweight division recently got a shocking change in its throne. Kamaru Usman, who reigned as the champion for three years, was dethroned by his longtime rival Leon Edwards in their rematch at UFC 278, courtesy of a brutal head kick KO from ‘Rocky’.

Jorge Masvidal, who contested Usman for the 170-pound belt twice during the latter’s title reign and was unsuccessful in both attempts, has set his gaze on gold once again, and ahead of his comeback to the cage, believes he is the next in line to wrap the title around his belt.

“I will be the ww champ of the ufc soon,” Masvidal tweeted on Monday.

Jorge Masvidal had the upper hand when he brawled Leon Edwards three years back

‘Gamebred’ was last seen in action against his fellow 170-pounder Colby Covington at UFC 272 back in March, which marked the 37-year-old’s third defeat in a row- on the heels of the back to back losses against Usman.

The loss to Covington was followed by an altercation between the two at a bar in Miami a couple of weeks later, and Masvidal faced battery charges for his alleged assault on ‘Chaos’ and if proved guilty, he may be behind the bars for several years.

Concerning his next UFC fight, Masvidal was recently involved in speculations regarding a fight with Gilbert Burns, but he later denied the rumours. “Don’t believe anything anyone says about me unless you hear it from me,” he tweeted following reports of him nodding to a fight against ‘Durinho’.

While Masvidal is eyeing a title shot against Edwards, its most likely that the next title fight will be a trilogy between Edwards and Usman, as the new champion recently told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour that Masvidal needs to rack up more wins before he can get a title shot.

“Whoever, whenever,” said Edwards, “I’d like to run it back with Usman but it has to be in London. I know that Dana came out and said Wembley, that would be amazing, to headline Wembley with Usman. But if not, like I said, let Masvidal get a few wins. That would be a big fight as well. I’d love to f**king smack his head after him.” [H/T Heavy.com]

However, Masvidal and Edwards had been involved in a brawl back in 2019, when Masvidal attacked Edwards backstage at a UFC event in London, leaving the latter bloodied.
