UFC 244 is a wrap!
Miami’s own and #3 ranked Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal defeated fan favorite Nate Diaz via third round doctor stoppage to clinch the BMF title wrapped around his waist by none other than Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Diaz did suffer two huge cuts around his eye however the doctor stoppage, considering the magnitude of the fight, did made the end anticlimactic. Especially keeping in mind the stylistic aspect as Diaz, known for his extreme cardio was expected to pick up from fourth round and had a vague chance to win despite being behind on scorecards.
That being said, some parts of the MMA community believed Masvidal would have got tired in the championship rounds. A happy yet discontent Masvidal addressed the issue speaking with Ariel Helwani and Chael Sonnen. (via YouTube):
Masvidal firstly cleared the fact that he would have liked the fight to continue as he wanted a finish over his ‘masterpiece’. Masvidal did feel discredited by the fact that his victory was overshadowed by people talking about the cut. He however denied the accusations of him getting gassed and finished in the later rounds. Masvidal pointed out the fact that he has never had cardio issues and has never even been finished inside the octagon.
Masvidal also took a jab on former double champ Conor McGregor saying ‘I’m not McTapper’! Masvidal claimed that with reference to McGregor exerting a lot of power in the earlier rounds and getting submitted later when he fought Diaz in their first fight.
The fight for how long it lasted was a slugfest. Masvidal cut Diaz open with a huge elbow and knocked him down with a vicious head kick in the first round. Diaz would eventually try to comeback but Masvidal but catch him everytime coming in and later on implemented body shots to slow Diaz down.
