Jorge Masvidal’s career as a mixed martial artist has concluded, but the former welterweight title challenger and “BMF” titlist is hanging his gloves up with regrets.

After three consecutive setbacks- twice against Kamaru Usman and once against Colby Covington, “Gamebred” took a year off before returning against Gilbert Burns last Saturday night in the co-main event at UFC 287.

Unfortunately, Masvidal wasn’t able to break his losing streak against “Durinho”. After a competitive first round, Burns took control of the fight, dominating Masvidal for the rest two rounds to walk away with a unanimous decision victory.

It’s crazy how much wiser I am now: Jorge Masvidal

Prior to the fight, Masvidal had already hinted at retirement if he’d be unsuccessful at making a comeback against Burns, and so he kept his word. However, the decision comes with some regrets, but one that stands above the others, Masvidal revealed during an interview on The MMA Hour.

The biggest regret for Masvidal, as he words it, is not taking accountability.

“There’s a million [regrets] that stick out,” said Masvidal. “Because it’s always that, you know, I’m Captain Hindsight, like, ‘Oh my gosh, my coach told me, don’t go that night because, you know, it’s gonna-‘ then, bam, you know, so about 10 million regrets. I wish I was this wise when I was competing just like four or five years ago, you know, it’s crazy how much wiser I am now. But just in that retiring, my ego completely leaving me to an extent, you know, as far as, like, competition goes, and seeing, like, critical mistakes that I thought, like, ‘Oh, it’s not my fault,’ it actually was my fault.”

“…I feel like I opened the door for a lot of fighters such as myself, you know,” he went on. “To come in there and get it, whether they have a perfect record, whether they have a collegiate background, or this background, just go in there and be as violent as you can, as long as you can and things will work out for you in this sport you know?” [H/T MMA News]
