UFC 246 featured the comeback party of superstar and former double champion Conor McGregor as he destroyed Cowboy Cerrone in only 40 seconds.

In attendance however was the man who was vaguely associated with McGregor, ‘BMF title’ holder Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal. The idea of McGregor fighting Masvidal was quickly brushed off by President Dana White. White claimed Masvidal to be too big for McGregor. The statement obviously didn’t go well with McGregor which further set the narrative for the fight.

“You can’t ask me that,” Masvidal said. “You gotta ask Conor that… When they asked [Dana White] why the fights not happening, he said it in the nicest way possible and he said I was too much man for him. Meaning, I’m too much man for him. I asked this guy to fight me, you know? It is what it is.”

Masvidal is willing to sacrifice even a title shot for the McGregor fight. However with champion Kamaru Usman sidelined due to injury, Masvidal’s manager proposed an interim welterweight title bout between Masvidal and McGregor. McGregor obviously has other options specifically a rematch against arch rival Khabib Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov obviously has to get through Tony Ferguson first at UFC 249 in April. As per 170 is concerned, Masvidal has a clear message for McGregor.

“Our management have been talking back and forth and it’s not in their future,” Masvidal said. “It’s not something they want… And that’s good for him. Go do your thing. Go back down to your division. Do whatever you’re gonna do. Whether you’re gonna win or lose, that’s none of my business. Go do your stuff but at 170, there’s only one sheriff in town.”

Masvidal is on a tear, with a three round knockout streak. One of them being the fastest in the history of the UFC (5 seconds) against Ben Askren at UFC 239 in July. Masvidal took on Nate Diaz for the ‘BMF title’ at Madison Square Garden in November. Even though it was a controversial doctor stoppage win for Masvidal. he pretty much dominated Diaz till third round.
