The former two-time UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo has reigned as the Champion for nearly
seven long years in the WEC and UFC. Now after two straight losses to current featherweight champion
Max Holloway, Aldo’s coach Andres Pederneiras shed some light on his most decorated pupil’s future.
According to the renowned coach, after a decade’s dominance over the 145 pounds division, the
Brazilian legend has finally thought about hanging up his UFC gloves and wants to leave the company for
good.
In the past the featherweight legend has been vocal about his displeasure with his treatment in the
hands of the UFC. Firstly he was not given a rematch after he lost his title to Conor McGregor but
instead given an interim title fight against Frankie Edgar. Later, when The Notorious one vacated his 145
pounds title, Aldo was promoted as the undisputed featherweight champion.
“He asked to fight boxing, Dana denied and, later, Conor was fighting boxing," Pederneiras said "He did
not have the thought he thought he might have. Months before he asked, the answer was no. Months
later Conor manages to fight in boxing without problem and the UFC allowed it. Of course he has a lot of
money involved and in his [Aldo’s] fight he would not, but not everything in life is money. He became
quite unmotivated.”
In the past Aldo had also threatened the UFC that he would enter the Octagon to straightaway tap his
way out of his match. This however has not happened in his last two matches.
“We’re still talking to see how much he wants to keep fighting or not,” he said. “I think Aldo’s career is a
career that nobody can talk badly about. He can do whatever he wants. To retire, to continue, to make a
super fight. He is thinking. He is a guy who has managed to make a lot of money over the course of his
career and he can retire today without depending on anyone. He will never go hungry in his life. He
invested his money; he knew how to save it.”
Aldo had a troubled childhood and he had to hungry for many days without food. He has struggled his
way up the ladder and has invested his money in business.
“I’ve never heard him talk about stopping," he said. "I think Aldo has been at it for a long time, in a very
continuous time. I think Aldo could take a vacation and feel that motivation to return. I already talked to
him, but he wants to end the UFC contract as soon as possible.”
Aldo has nothing much to prove. He has accomplished a lot and is a true legend of the sport and a future
UFC Hall of Famer. He has nothing to be ashamed of. On the other hand if he retires, a rematch with
McGregor might tempt him to return to the Octagon.
