In a remarkable journey from legal blindness to the UFC octagon, Jose Johnson is making waves. At UFC on ESPN 58, Johnson takes on Asu Almabayev in his flyweight debut. But it’s not just the flyweight title he’s after – Johnson has ambitious plans for titles across multiple divisions.

Jose Johnson (16-8 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was diagnosed as legally blind at the age of 4 due to birth issues. His vision struggles have been a lifelong challenge, but he’s turned them into an advantage in MMA.

Johnson fought without contact lenses or corrective surgery, relying on other senses to compensate. Johnson underwent corrective eye surgery, transforming his vision.

Jose Johnson Opens up on His Struggles With His Vision

He now sees better than ever before, allowing him to be both defensively sound and offensively effective. His debut at 125 pounds has been smooth, and he’s already thinking beyond flyweight.

“When I was 4 years old, I was diagnosed legally blind. It was due to birth issues,” Johnson said. “My eyes have always been my enemy. I could see that of a 78 year old man when I was 5 years old. That’s what my vision was. So I’ve always struggled with that.” Jose Johnson said.

“When I was an amateur and a regional scene pro, I never fought with contacts in and I never had corrective surgery on my eyes. I fought just completely on the distance of my body, hearing footsteps, timing, everything like that. I was like the Daredevil (super hero) of MMA. … For my eyes being worse, it helped me fix my defenses. I had to be more defensively sound. Now I can be more offensively effective with me being able to see what I can.”

Johnson aims to dominate not only the flyweight division but also bantamweight and featherweight. He envisions taking out flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja, then setting his sights on Sean O’Malley (bantamweight) and Ilia Topuria (featherweight). Johnson’s long-term goal? To conquer lightweight as well.

Jose Johnson’s journey from legal blindness to UFC contender is inspiring. His determination and newfound vision could propel him to titles in multiple weight classes. Keep an eye on this rising star!
